Bone cancer is a rare disease in which cancer cells start to form in the bone tissue. The cause of primary bone cancer is unknown and genetics play a major role. Some of the types of bone cancer include, Osteosarcoma which is the most common primary cancer and is usually found in the arms, legs or pelvis. Chordoma is a bone tumor that occurs around the skull or spine. Fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma are cancers that develop in the soft tissues and move to the legs, arms and jaw bones. The sooner the cancer is discovered the more favorable the chances of surviving become. Most diseases of the skeletal system can be inherited. There are a few risk factors that raise your chances of getting bone cancer. Some of these risks include, Paget’s disease which is a none cancerous bone condition, exposure to radiation, and family history of bone cancer. Osteosarcoma usually effects people from the ages of 10 to 30 and is more commonly diagnosed in men. It can also be inherited. Chondrosarcoma affects people over the age of 20 and multiple exostoses which is inherited condition that gives you bumps on your bones. Fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma affects middle aged to elderly people. Another disease of the skeletal system is Arthritis. There are over 200 different diseases that can led to Arthritis. The most common people who get Arthritis are the elderly. Arthritis causes its victims extreme pain, and swelling and stiffness in their joints. The most common places where Arthritis is most likely to occur are the hands, hips, knees and lower back.
Surgery can be used to treat almost every kind of disease in the skeletal system. When the doctors preform surgery they may not always be able to save the limb they are operating on. Surgery is not always able to remove all the cancer cells so the doctors then go to radiation therapy. this is used after surgery because it will normally kill all the left over cancer cells that the doctors could not remove. Radiation therapy usually leaves the patient in a weak state because it weakens the immune system.
This is a picture of Chondrosarcoma cancer. this is the second most common bone cancer. it is very rare for someone under the age of 20 to get this disease. It is more likely for someone between the ages of 50 and 70 to be diagnose with this type of cancer. Chondrosarcoma cancer can appear wherever there is cartilage but it is most likely going to appear in the upper thigh area. Chondrosarcoma starts with an abnormal cartilage cell that divides out of control. Experts are not exactly sure what causes this disease but they believe that it has to do with genetic abnormality or damaged chromosomes. One of the symptoms is a large lump at the sight of the pain. Limping or a decreasing use of the affected area. Swelling or redness and the last symptom is sharp or dull pain. The pain usually gets worse at night. The pain gets more consistent as the bone cancer grows. There are three types of treatment for this cancer. The first and most common treatment is surgery. If the tumor is in a limb the doctors will try to extract the tumor with out removing the affected limb. Sometimes removing the entire limb is necessary and there isn't a way to get around it. Radiation Therapy is the next why to treat cancer. It is used after surgery to kill off any left over cancer cells. If this type of cancer is caught early the person has a five year survival rate of 90 percent.
Rickets is an abnormal bone growth in children. Rickets is a failure to get minerals to your bones. The symptoms of this disease is bowed legs and bowed arms. other symptoms are bony bumps along the ribcage and knock knees.seizures may also occur. A child with Rickets will have a large abdomen, wide ankles, an odd curve of the spine or back and a large forehead. The treatment of Rickets is to replace the deficient calcium, which should eliminate most of the symptoms. It is encouraged to be exposed to a moderate amount of sunlight. Darker skinned babies need to be exposed to the sun for a longer period of time. The bone abnormalities should start to disappear over the course of three to nine months. Children are encouraged to play outdoors so that they can get the sunlight.
This is a picture of Osteosarcoma cancer. Treatment for this type of cancer depends on the size and placement of the tumor. The first treatment for this type of cancer is drugs. Doctors give the patient a combination of cancer fighting drugs to kill some of the cells before they go in for surgery. The drugs are also used to control the spread of the cancer and to shrink the tumor. These drugs give surgery a better chance to remove all pieces of the tumor. When the patient is in surgery 90 percent of the time the arm or leg can be saved. There are ocations when the limb can not be saved because of an infaction or something else goes wrong causing the doctors to remove the limb. This accounts for 20 percent of bone cancers. Osteosarcoma is the sixth leading cancer in children under the age of 15. Acording to wikipedia this type of cancer affects 400 children under hte age of 20 and around 500 adults every year.
Bone cancer- A bone tumor refers to a neoplastic growth of tissue in bone. It can be used for both benign and malignant abnormal growths found in bone (google.com defintion)
Arthritis- over 200 disease may cause it. The effects include swelling, warmth and restrected motion of the area.
Rickets- it is a childhood disease that is caused by a lack of vitamin D and Calcium
A child with Rickets can over come this disease by having the right amount of vitamin D and calcium
Osteosarcoma- malignant bone tumor; most common in children and young adults where it tends to affect the femur (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn)
Chondrosarcoma- is a type of cancer in the cartilage
Treatments for bonce caner are, surgery which involves removing all the tumors around the bone.
Radiation therapy which uses high energy radiation to kill cancer cells.
Chemotherapy uses anti drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells Biotherapy/Immunotherapy
Biotherapy/Immunotherapy uses the body's own immune system to fight bone cancer or to lessen the side effects
Bone fracture is the nerve endings that surround bones contain pain fibers and and these fibers become irritated when the bone is broken or bruised.(http://www.medicinenet.com/fracture/article.htm)
Chondrosarcoma is the second most common disease for the skeletal system.
Radiation Therapy is mostly used after the patient has had surgery.
Surgery is not always able to save the limb that is being operated on.
